Heath Care Reform- Do you like it ?

Yes, it's me! I haven't fallen off the edge of the earth just yet! Although, sometimes I feel like I'm losing my footing, :)
I'm here to discuss health care reform with you, because I have a lot of questions.
What the hell is in that bill the President is getting ready to sign into and make law of the land?
Here's what I've heard so far:
1. Some say that it will cut Medicare benefits, and that Medicare will be broke for good. I thought Medicare was already broke , for all practical purposes.

2. I heard that 38 states plan to challenge the constitutionality of the bill as soon as it is signed, because they obviously believe it is not constitutional.

3. I heard that the bill will allow federal funding of abortions. Hmmm........

4. Some say it will produce jobs and reduce the national deficit, some don't believe it will.

5. The bill does REQUIRE Americans to purchase health insurance, or they will face fines and penalties; is this how they plan on paying for this new bill?

6. The bill provides that you can keep you children on your health insurance until they are 26 years old.

7. The bill also provides that insurance companies can not turn you down due to pre-existing conditions.

8. I heard also this bill is suppose to help small business owners provide insurance to their employees without being taxed...... if they don't make more than 250,000 a year, (the small business owner that is).

9. And I just heard that many of these new reform issues will go into effect in 3 to 6 months.

10. I heard that this bill will make it harder for states to maintain programs that they have for children in their states.

This was voted on just last nite, and it WAS a partisan vote, not one Republican voted yes for this bill. Hmmm.

On a more personal view, how will this bill effect my job?? How will it effect the jobs of doctors, nurses, and all of the other health care workers?
I mean it's bound to effect us some how, right?

So, I'm confused about this bill, and these are just a very few things I know about it. I believe I could've read the bill on line, but it was only on line for 72 hours.
And what is this reconciliation thing??
I know it has something to do with how the Democrats were able to get this bill passed; like they voted on it and the President will sign it into law, and THEN our representatives and senators will go back and fix it?
To me that sounds like a kind of sneaky, round about way of getting this legislation passed; legislation that will affect over a sixth of our economy?
Hmmmm
Please help to understand these issues, I really want to feel better about what our law makers have done for us or to us.

I'm going to add a poll for this post as well, please vote, I want to know how many of you out there are happy with this new legislation that is about to become the law of our land.
Please ask your followers to come vote. I will be doing a post on the results April 2nd,2010.
Please let me know your thoughts.
I'm desperately trying to keep an OPEN MIND here, help me understand, please.

glad you are back.
don't ask me I try not to think about it. it will directly affect me and not in a good way. the pit of my stomach tells me that. it was all that J wants to talk about. not even a good morning, I am half asleep and I am listening to health care bill reform and what it means to us.
I gotta stop getting up later than him.
this morning I opened my eyes and gave him a hug. that shut him up, but what am I going to do the rest of the day?
answer: keep him off his toes so I don't have to listen to it...

I believe that the mere fact of madatory insurance for all citizens, and legal residents is bull@#$#@@@!!!

I think I will post a link to your perfectly written post on this issue. I do know that after the Republican from Boston was voted in it sent the Democrats into crisis controll and hurried to pass a more undesireable reform. I think that it will hurt more people than it will help. What about people with part time jobs?

love,

Jesse Noe

A visitor from Diosa Del Desierto Corazon....very interesting post.

I can't help but wonder if they REQUIRE individuals to purchase health insurance...what if they can't pay for the insurance, or the penalties or fines that will be imposed for not having the insurance?? What will happen to those people??

I too am trying to keep an open mind...but it is rather confusing.

Hey there Adora,
Thanks for coming by! I have been away for awhile now, just trying to fit everything in, lol.
I know what you mean though, I think everyone is getting tired of listening to it, but we have to keep going because this bill affects all of us.
You take care my good friend,

Thank you Jesse, I appreciate your help sweeite. xoox
I don't know about the part timers, I hadn't thought about that. Good question.
I'm really not sure about the mandatory purchase of health care. Something about that seems really unsettling to me.
Love you baby, xoox

1. Medicare is not broke yet. This bill could actually help.
2. A few people are talking about challenging the provisions for requiring coverage. However similar laws (requiring people to buy car insurance) have withstood challenges.
3. The bill will not allow federal funding for abortion. The president signed off on that to draw in some votes from pro-life Democrats.
4. People pretty much see what they believe. The truth is there are various theories on that and until the plan is fully enacted, we don't know exactly how it will work out.
5. If everyone isn't included (except for the very poor or indigent who will be on something like Medicaid) then it will cost more for everyone. If you don't have health coverage, then my costs go up to cover you. They are paying for the bill by taxing the rich, who have been able to get even richer since the Reagan years. Taxes on the wealthiest Americans have decreased dramatically under the theory of "trickle down economics" which doesn't work.
6. I understand children being covered to age 26 has some provisions. If the child is working full time then you cannot keep the child on your plan. At the moment when so many people are out of work, this might be a good idea. We will see how it works out in the long run.
7. This is a good thing, isn't it? It would be terrible if you or a child had cancer or MS and you were turned down.
8. Depending on the size of the company, he government will help small businesses provide insurance for employees, many of whom are not covered now.
9. Various measures go into effect during the current year and over the years to come. Fazing it in will help those who need time to implement changes to accommodate the plan.
10. Apparently something like 30 million more Americans will be covered than are now. Most of those are children. Since state plans are so varied, it might affect some. I would guess if the state plan is better than the federal, the state plan will provide what the federal does not.

How will the bill affect you? It depends. If you have a good health care plan now, it might not affect you much. If you, are not wealthy, your taxes will not be raised. We will probably need more primary care physicians and there is some talk about ways to steer more med students into that. There are other options. My doctor has a nurse practitioner on staff. She's not a full-fledged doctor but can do most of what a doctor can do for less pay and probably not as high a cost for her education.

Sneaky way around? Republicans decided they were going to block the bill to make Obama look bad, no matter what was good for the American people. I would gladly condemn Democrats who did the same.

The Democrats asked for input from the Republicans. Every time the Republicans suggested something and the Democrats decided it was a good idea, then the Republicans changed their minds and decided they didn't like that idea after all. I think it would have been a better bill with input from both sides, but the Republicans were determined to stop it at all costs and demonize the Democrats in the process, so the Democrats had to pass it with no help from the Republicans because Republicans obstructed every effort to make it a bi-partisan project.

Every country is different, and each has to find the best solution for its people. I have many friends in other countries and most would rebel if they had to give up their government health care plan. In a few years, I think most people here will feel the same.
